Shaped by the Coast: How Morocco’s Surf Life Influenced Azzugag

Taghazout Bay, Morocco at Sunset.

The Moroccan coastline is more than a backdrop to Villa Azzugag — it’s the heart of our story. From the waves rolling into Taghazout Bay to the salt air that drifts up Tamraght’s hillside, the coast shaped not only the rhythm of daily life here, but also the way we imagined and rebuilt our micro-resort.

Surf Culture Meets Slow Living

Taghazout and Tamraght have long been known as surf villages — places where time bends to the tides, and days are measured in swells and sunsets. The renovation of Villa Azzugag was guided by this same rhythm. Instead of rushing to expand or build big, we slowed down and let the coastline inspire us.

Our spaces are intentionally intimate. Terraces are shared by just two rooms — creating semi-private corners where you can choose to connect over morning coffee or simply breathe in the salt air in quiet reflection.

Design Inspired by the Ocean

The surf life is simple: board, wax, wave. And maybe a wetsuit.

That simplicity shaped our design philosophy.

  • Natural airflow: Rooms are oriented to let in the sea breeze, reducing the need for heavy cooling systems.

  • Materials with soul: Local plaster and stone reflect the textures of the coastline — smooth like driftwood, warm like sand.

  • Colors of the sea: Blues, ochres, and soft neutrals echo the horizon where ocean meets desert.

Each choice mirrors the balance of energy and calm that the ocean teaches us.

Spaces for Connection

Surf culture is also about community — stories swapped after long sessions, fires lit on the beach, meals that stretch into the night. Villa Azzugag’s shared areas were shaped with that spirit in mind: terraces that invite conversation, dining spaces built for lingering, and cozy nooks where you can retreat after a day in the water.

Sustainability Rooted in the Coast

To live by the ocean is to respect its fragility. That’s why sustainability is at the core of our renovation. Solar power will harness Morocco’s endless sun, while natural light and ventilation keep spaces cool without waste. Our kitchen will celebrate seasonality, sourcing fresh produce from local growers.

By keeping our scale intimate, we reduce impact on the land we love and stay true to the surf lifestyle: tread lightly, leave no trace, and look for ways to give back more than you take.

A Place Between Surf and Soul

Villa Azzugag is not just near the ocean — it belongs to it. The surf breaks, the sunsets, and the salt in the air all left their mark on our renovation process, ensuring the Villa is not just a boutique hotel in Morocco, but a reflection of the coastal life that makes this region unique.

When we open our doors, we hope guests feel that connection: that life here flows like the tide, sometimes wild and exhilarating, sometimes slow and still — but always deeply rooted in the magic of Morocco’s coast.
